We are so happy to welcome you to our home in Prince Edward County – a beautiful getaway with picturesque views of East Lake, minutes from Sandbanks Beach (rated one of the most beautiful beaches in Canada), lots of wineries to explore, antique shops to discover treasures, art galleries featuring prominant Canadian artists (such as Susan Wallis), and the most exquisite culinary restaurants run by renowned Canadian chefs.
Susan Wallis, encaustic artist
Susan is an accomplished encaustic artist who shows her work at galleries across Canada and is collected internationally. Some of her works are for sale on the walls at Away. B&B guests are also welcome to peek into her studio located on the property.
Susan is the first point of contact for Away in the County guests. She will assist you in designing the perfect County vacation, suggesting itineraries, along with dining suggestions. Susan is up to date on local events and new businesses. She is also the curator of the interior of AWAY. From art, (both her own and from their private collection), to books, to artifacts and memorabilia. Guests enjoy and comment on the lovely touches to the rooms like the picnic basket, ready to go when off to the beach, and the fresh flowers from the Away gardens. And yes, Susan is the “B” for bed at Away Bed and Breakfast. The 100% cotton sheets from Florence are washed and hung outside, dried and then steamed crisp on the beds providing the most luxurious sleep experience. When not busy in her studio Susan can be found tending her small flock of chickens and weeding the AWAY flower garden.
Glen Wallis, maker of all things
Glen is a designer and master craftsman and is responsible for the renovation of Away in the County, Bed & Breakfast. Everything in our home has been custom-made by him, from the windows to the doors, the maple floors and even the beds. Glen is also the “ B” for breakfast at Away Bed and Breakfast. His scrumptious muffins and renowned Eggs Benedict have guests leaving raving reviews. He is an avid gardener and loves growing his heirloom tomatoes.
Glen is also a manufacturer of some of Canada’s premiere awards, like the Gemini and Canadian Screen Award for the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television and the Canadian Cinematographer’s award. Glen is the founder of Food to Share, a local charity that takes excess food from local farmers and turns it into meals cooked by volunteers, which are then distributed fresh through our local food banks.
Both Susan and Glen also belong to a local comedy troupe called Taste That, the County’s Artisanal Comedy Troupe. They practice the art of improvisation and sketch comedy and have along with their troupe members opened at the Regent Theatre in Picton for Gavin Crawford, Steve Patterson and most recently Kevin Nealon of SNL fame.
